1000 churches

Bredon Hill Alfred Edward Housman

In summertime on Bredon
The bells they sound so clear;
Round both the shires they ring them
In steeples far and near,
A happy noise to hear.
Here of a Sunday morning
My love and I would lie,
And see the coloured counties,
And hear the larks so high
About us in the sky.
The bells would ring to call her
In valleys miles away;
“Come all to church, good people;
Good people come and pray.”
But here my love would stay.
And I would turn and answer
Among the springing thyme,
“Oh, peal upon our wedding,
And we will hear the chime,
And come to church in time.”
But when the snows at Christmas
On Bredon top were strown,
My love rose up so early
And stole out unbeknown
And went to church alone.
They tolled the one bell only,
Groom there was none to see,
The mourners followed after,
And so to church went she,
And would not wait for me.
The bells they sound on Bredon,
And still the steeples hum,
“Come all to church, good people.”—
O noisy bells, be dumb;
I hear you, I will come.

The Our Lady of Victories Cathedral[1][2] also known as the Cathedral of Maseru, is a Catholic Church located in the city of Maseru, Lesotho. The church is governed by the Roman or Latin rite and functions as the headquarters of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Maseru (Archidioecesis Maseruena) which was raised to its current status in 1961 by the Bull "Etsi priors" of Pope John XXIII. It is under the pastoral responsibility of Archbishop Gerard Tlali Lerotholi and was visited by Pope John Paul II on his tour of several African countries in 1988.

31.  Barrydale - Western Cape

The NG Congregation was established in 1880 and had its first church building at Moreson at the other end of Barrydale. The church became too small for the congregation and in 1905 a decision was taken by the Dutch Reformed congregation to build a new church. An enormous fund-raising effort realised €5000, which made the venture possible. The contractors were Ledbury and Moon, who were famous for their work on public buildings throughout the Overberg. With its handsome clock tower, stained glass and lancet windows, wooden ceiling and choir gallery, the church is a fine example of early 20th century South African church architecture. It seats 600 people. The church clock and its chiming bells have been in operation since 1908, when the house of worship was opened. The church is Barrydale’s most famous landmark.
